Semtech has expanded its AirLink router portfolio with the launch of the new AirLink RX400 and AirLink EX400, two compact routers designed to deliver long-term cellular connectivity with exceptionally low power consumption.
Both models use 5G RedCap technology (based on the 3GPP Release 17 standard). This makes them a future-ready replacement for LTE in IoT devices that don’t need full 5G speeds, but still need long-term support, reliable performance, and efficient power use.
Designed to Bridge the Gap Between LTE and Full 5G
As LTE networks approach long-term sunset timelines, many IoT deployments face a difficult trade-off – stick with legacy technology or absorb the cost, complexity and power draw of full 5G hardware. The RX400 and EX400 address this challenge directly, providing right-sized 5G performance with significantly lower energy requirements, while maintaining strong throughput, low latency, and global band support.
Both routers support theoretical speeds of up to 226 Mbps downlink and 120 Mbps uplink, making them well suited to modern industrial and commercial use cases without over-specifying the network.
AirLink RX400 – Ultra-Rugged Connectivity for Harsh Environments
The AirLink RX400 is purpose-built for critical infrastructure and remote assets operating in harsh conditions. Housed in a sealed aluminium enclosure with IP64 and MIL-STD-810H ratings, it is designed to withstand vibration, temperature extremes, and environmental exposure.
The RX400 supports 5G RedCap and LTE, single or dual RS-232 serial connectivity, dual-band GNSS and a Gigabit Ethernet port, making it ideal for SCADA systems, utilities, oil and gas sites and smart city infrastructure. Its ultra-low idle power consumption of around 756 mW enables reliable operation in off-grid locations powered by solar or battery systems.
Optional WiFi 6 support, edge computing capabilities via containerised applications, and robust power protection features further enhance its suitability for mission-critical deployments.
AirLink EX400 – Compact 5G RedCap for Commercial IoT
The AirLink EX400 targets commercial and light industrial environments where space, power efficiency, and ease of integration are key. Its compact, semi-rugged design with IP30-rated metal housing makes it well suited to indoor or protected outdoor installations.
Designed for applications such as digital signage, EV charging, smart lockers, manufacturing, and smart agriculture, the EX400 supports dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, optional WiFi 6, dual-band GNSS and a simplified two-antenna design. With idle power consumption of approximately 840 mW, it delivers efficient 5G connectivity in deployments where traditional 5G hardware would be impractical.
Like the RX400, the EX400 also supports edge computing and advanced routing, VPN, and security features via AirLink OS.
Built-In Management and Long-Term Support
Both routers ship with 12 months of AirLink Complete, providing access to cloud-based device and security management, firmware updates, technical support, and extended hardware warranty options. For organisations that require on-premise control, AirLink Manager and AirLink Mobility Manager are available as optional alternatives.
Semtech has committed to providing software updates until at least 2030, reinforcing the RX400 and EX400’s suitability for long deployment lifecycles while helping to reduce ongoing operational overhead.
Built-In Management and Long-Term Support
By combining compact form factors, ultra-low power consumption, and rugged design options, the AirLink RX400 and EX400 unlock new deployment scenarios for 5G connectivity.
For organisations planning the transition away from LTE while keeping power usage and total cost of ownership under control, these new AirLink routers offer a practical and future-ready path forward.
