Bishops College: Multi-Campus Connectivity with UniFi

Bishops College, a K–12 school in Cape Town, South Africa, operates across three campuses and more than 60 buildings, supporting over 1,000 students and 250 staff. With classrooms, labs, libraries, offices, and boarding houses all depending on reliable connectivity, the school needed a network that could scale across a complex education environment while remaining simple to manage.

Bishops College’s network had grown over time through a mix of legacy wireless, switching, and core infrastructure. As expectations increased across teaching, learning, and boarding environments, the school needed a more unified platform that could deliver consistent WiFi, stronger visibility, and easier management across multiple campuses.

The IT team also needed enterprise-grade performance and resilience without the complexity, licensing costs, or procurement challenges often associated with traditional networking solutions.

Bishops College standardised key areas of its network on UniFi, using the platform to support wireless connectivity, switching, core aggregation, and centralised management across more than 60 buildings.

The deployment includes over 230 UniFi devices, with UniFi access points supporting classroom and boarding house connectivity, and Enterprise Fortress Gateway and Enterprise Campus Aggregation switches strengthening the network core. The school has also implemented a 200 Gbps MC-LAG between core switches to improve performance and resilience.

With UniFi’s single management interface and mobile tools, the IT team can monitor users, troubleshoot issues, update configurations, and manage network policies more efficiently across the estate.

  • Stronger multi-campus performance: Bishops College now has a scalable UniFi network supporting classrooms, shared spaces, and boarding houses across three campuses.

  • Improved resilience: A 200 Gbps MC-LAG between core switches provides greater bandwidth and redundancy at the network core.

  • Faster troubleshooting: Live client insights, throughput testing, and mobile management help technicians identify and resolve issues more quickly.

  • A clear upgrade path: The school can continue expanding UniFi, including WiFi 7 access points, and future high-availability features, without a disruptive full-system replacement.

“The single plane of glass administration… getting insights from the gateway level all the way down to the client device… in one centralised view.”
